What is an MOT and why should I get one?

An MOT (which stands for Ministry of Transport) is a test used to establish how roadworthy a car is. These tests check the quality of a car's brakes and tyres, examine whether the fuel system is working properly and make sure that seatbelts, lights and mirrors are effective.

While the majority of vehicles need an MOT, there are some exemptions. These exemptions include cars that are over 40 years old (if they haven't been modified in the last 30 years) and tractors and electric goods vehicles registered before 2015. In spite of this, you still need to keep your vehicle in a roadworthy condition.

What happens if my car fails an MOT?

A vehicle can fail an MOT for a number of reasons, with the defects usually categorised as either "minor", "major" or "dangerous". If you have a "dangerous" or "major" fault, you won't be able to drive your car until the problem has been resolved. In these scenarios, you'll be given a 'refusal of an MOT test certification'.

If you get a "minor" defect, then the issue isn't considered severe enough to cause the vehicle to fail its MOT, so you will be able to drive your vehicle away from the test centre. However, you should get any defects repaired as soon as possible.

What are MOT advisories?

Even if your car passes its MOT, you may be given a list of small issues to address - these are known as advisories. While you can legally drive your car without fixing them, your mechanic is essentially advising you to get them seen to quickly.

How do I check when my MOT is due?

If you have a paper copy, you can find the due date of your MOT on last year's test certificate. However, if you can't find this, you can enter your vehicle registration on the GOV.UK website to see the MOT expiry date held by the DVLA.
